To help you kickstart your backyard project, here are our top 3 tips to get your renovation plans going!

Council Consultation:

Remember that your first and most crucial point of call before starting your project is staying onside with the Council.  Treat them as an important advisory from day one so you know you’re in the right before you start spending any of your hard-earned money.  If you’re planning any external renovations i.e. changes to your home’s footprint or basic structure; or even just installing that new deck to make the most of Summer BBQ weather – these all do require building consent from the Council.  By talking to your Council you’ll quickly find out what you can and possibly can’t do, what the consent process will cost you and critically how long it will take to gain approval before you even start digging up your backyard.

Clarity on Costs:

Its not uncommon to be a hesitant when talking about money in everyday life – but in renovation and building work it’s absolutely essential.  From the first drafting of your budget through to asking for at least three quotes from the various trades that you may need to hire, this is your project and your money; don’t be afraid to ask about costs – you will be the one that has to pay the bills.  This however is where the Canterbury Home Show comes in handy!  Over three days you’re able to speak with suppliers and trades about what your renovation vision is and maybe even snag yourself a show special pricing!

Needs vs wants:

This is the fun part; here the sky is the limit on your renovation project when it comes to thinking about what you’d WANT your renovation to look like if money was no object.  However, if the lotto results don’t fall your way then your next step is to look at your budget (remembering that a major renovation spend should be no more that 25% of the value of your home) and hone your design plans with a builder, landscaper or architect until you come to something that you can realistically afford.   So while you may want a tropical rainforest installed in your backyard complete with rain sensors and monkeys – a talented landscape designer may well talk to round to very satisfactory tropical plant design with clever rambling stone pathway and water feature which you can overlook from your new back deck.
